Main Hall (Kondō)
Welcome to Daigo-ji Temple.
On your left stands the Kondō Hall, the central building of Daigo-ji Temple and a designated National Treasure of Japan.
Its history begins in the year 926, founded through the prayers of Emperor Daigo.
The present structure was planned to be relocated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi from what is now Wakayama Prefecture, and was completed in 1600 during the time of his son, Hideyori.
The front of the hall measures approximately 12.6 meters across.
To give you a sense of scale, imagine a large sightseeing bus parked sideways — that is how wide and imposing this hall truly is.
As you step inside, you are greeted by the temple’s principal image, Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha, seated serenely at the center.
With a calm and compassionate gaze, the Buddha appears to quietly watch over all who enter.
Now, look up at the ceiling.
The finely crafted kogumi-gōtenjō, a lattice-style ceiling often compared to “wooden lace,” creates a beautiful interplay of light and shadow throughout the space.
Each year on February 23rd, a grand Buddhist ritual known as Godairiki-san is held here.
More than a thousand monks from across Japan gather to chant prayers amid towering flames, offering heartfelt wishes for peace and the well-being of all people.
The spiritual energy of prayers accumulated continuously for over a thousand years can still be felt, powerfully filling this sacred space today.
